New company makes official upbeat on next cruise season
Santo Domingo.- The Tourism Ministry announced the start of Dominican Republic operations of the cruise company MSC for the 2012-2013 season, with Santo Domingo as a port of departure and also includes La Romana. Tourism Ministry cruise department director Orfila Salazar said the country’s three major tourist ports received 450,000 cruise passengers during the recently ended season and affirmed that the agency will work to increase the figure.
She revealed that Royal Caribbean confirmed that their ships will be docking at Samana bay for the next two seasons, with 32,000 passengers, or 2% higher for the 2012-2013 season.
The official said La Romana continues to grow as a well organized destination, where most cruise passengers take various tours, including the Cave of the Wonders, Altos de Chavon, Palmilla, Isla Saona, the Basilica at Higuey, Tobacco Road among others.
Salazar said a US$30.0 million funding from the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB) aims to revamp the Colonial Zone, and relaunch Santo Domingo as a destination.
