Santo Domingo.- The National Energy Commission (CNE) on Tuesday announced it authorized an Italian company to build the country’s first array of private mini-hydroelectrics, to produce 15 to 17 gigawatts of energy yearly.

CNE president Enrique Martinez said it’s the first permit which the Dominican Government issues to a private company for a power unit under the provisions of Renewable Energy Incentive Law 57-07.

The generator with a 4 MW capacity will be installed in the Central Mountain community of village of Paso Bajito, Jarabacoa and slated to start operations by yearend 2014.

The company EVYP Caribbean will build the facility at a cost of 4.8 million euros.
