Health chief says seweage-tainted water brought cholera

Santo Domingo.- Public Health minister Bautista Rojas yesterday said the resurgence of cases of cholera in the town Tamboril, Santiago stems from a sewer pipe rupture which contaminated the water supply.

He said the problem was already solved, though patients continue streaming to area hospitals with diarrhea, a symptom he affirms is characteristic of the disease. “Tamboril’s entire aqueduct is being disinfected and we’re willing to remain there until there’s a total halt.”

Rojas said health personnel have worked in Tamboril for nine days -all diarrhea cases- treated as cholera since November 2010. ”More than 200 people with diarrhea have been treated in that town since Wednesday and before that 13 others with symptoms were hospitalized yesterday, but are in stable condition.”
