Dr. Bob’s Veterinary Clinic in Sosua

Being a licensed veterinarian in three different countries, (United States, Costa Rica, Dominican Republic) fluent in several languages, and having worked in the Dominican Republic for the last 25 years…would make you think that those kind of credentials are more than enough to entitle a visit to Dr. Bobs. Really though…that doesn’t even begin to scratch the surface of what this man is about.

Dr. Bob and his family have lived and worked on the island of Hispaniola for the past 35 years. He originally started working in Haiti on diplomat visa, managing animal repopulation due to the swine epidemic that was running rampant through the country. It was here that his deep-seated love for the Haitian people first blossomed.

Though they left Haiti to start a new life in the Dominican Republic with their family (2 homemade children, 2 adopted from the DR, and 3 from Haiti) their hearts remained with the Haitian people.

Dr. Bob and his family have started a ministry working alongside the poorest and most neglected people on the north coast. They have built homes for several thousand people, have started schools, fairtrade co-ops, water systems, gardens, feeding programs, and free medical care for the thousands of villagers in the surrounding area. They coordinate volunteer groups that come on short-term trips to give of their time and resources in community development.

He has also started two private schools in Sosua in order that his children and the children of the community can have access to the highest quality of education.

He is passionate about his work not only as a veterinarian, but also in his role as an integral member of his community. He has over 21 dogs…and though he may not say he has an animal rescue center…it’s evident once you step foot in his clinic. He works 5 days a week, and will stop what he’s doing at the drop of a hat in order to be present to an emergency situation any time of the week.

Dr. Bob is a man of great passion, love, and commitment…and that is most evident by the fruit of his life, and the mark he continues to leave on the community, people, and animals he is surrounded by.
