The Dominican Republic has become the favorite destination for Russian tourists traveling to the Caribbean. It also became the fastest growing winter destination in the Russian market during the 2012 first quarter, according to the Russian Union of Tourism.
According to the tourism agency, Russian tourists to the region grew by 57.2% during the first trimester of 2012. The Dominican Republic was the fifth favorite winter destination for Russians, headed only by Egypt, Vietnam, Tunisia and the Maldives. During the January to April period, 47,135 Russian visitors traveled to the Dominican Republic, a 58% increase over the same time period in 2011. Russia has become one of the country’s top 10 markets.
This year Russia occupies third place in the European tourism market, behind France and Germany. However, more Russian tourists are traveling to the Dominican Republic than tourists from Spain, England and Italy.
Punta Cana, in the country’s easternmost region, has become a favorite destination for Russian tourists. The Punta Cana international airport receives, on a daily basis, daily flights from Moscow and St. Petersburg. Next winter there will be scheduled flights between Russia and Puerto Plata, on the country’s north coast.
