Dominican Republic farm laborers get wage hike to US$210 per month
Santo Domingo.- The Labor Ministry on Friday announced it reached an agreement with the National Wage Committee, via which the minimum wage for heavy machine operators in the agriculture sector will be increased to RD$ 8,400 per month (US$210).
The announcement comes just days after Dominican lawmakers voted a controversial tax package into law, expected to raise staple prices as high as 15% percent, excepting basic foods.
The salaries of farm workers compete with those of day laborers in construction for some of the region’s lowest paying jobs, with RD$400 per day, or RD$9,000 per month.
