Dengue cases rise, mortality rate not a high

Santo Domingo.- Patients hospitalized with dengue have increased at Reid Cabral Children’s Hospital in recent weeks, closing July with around 100 admissions, 40 more than June’s 60 cases .

The figure was revealed yesterday by the hospital director Emilio Mena Castro, who said dengue cases have been rising at Reid Cabral in the last two months. “We’ve noticed an increase in the last two months with regard to the pattern that was prevailing during the year.”

He recommends that families and communities take the measures to prevent the breeding of that mosquito that transmits the disease.

He said each day the hospital admitted between two and three children with dengue fever, which is transmitted through a mosquito bite.

Mena said however that the mortality rate from this cause is low, even though the hospital has recorded five deaths so far this year, especially patients who arrive at the hospital in the fever’s late stage and in very delicate state.
