After more than 30 years, cruise ship visits Puerto Plata
Puerto Plata, Dominican Republic.- After more than three decades without a cruise ship in its port, the World Cruise, from the Bahamas arrived in the city Thursday, with 170 couples on board, or 340 passengers.
The travelers form part of the so called condo tourism that contracts transatlantic cruise ships to vacation in Caribbean and European countries.
The ship arrived at 7:30am when it was received by tourism and port authorities, after which the passengers toured visited historic sites and shops, spending thousands of dollars, to boost Puerto Plata’s economy.
“This will be a dynamic and a final launch cruise tourism, which started here in the eighties and nineties,” said Deputy Tourism Minister Cesar de los Santos, adding that Puerto Plata port can expect as many as 2,000 cruise tourists weekly until February.
The company Carnival Corporation plans to start building next year a cruise terminal in Puerto Plata, which can receive two ships simultaneously, with around 4,000 passengers.
