80,000MT of rice sent abroad boost Dom. Rep. exporter status
SANTO DOMINGO. – Dominican Republic consolidates its status as a rice exporter, supplying 80,000 metric tons to the international market this year, and hailed by entities abroad including the US Department of Agriculture.
The USDOA’s latest report on February said rice imports fell and the country has become self-sufficient in the grain’s production.
In its most recent meeting the National Rice Commission (CONA) authorized the export of 40,000 metric tons of rice, in addition to the 40,000 recently sent abroad.
With CONA’s measure the country would export 80,000 tons of rice in 2012, and caps record crops during the last seven years. It also approved to expand the rice reserve to 4,000 metric tons.
