In poor Dominican Republic lawmakers flaunt Rolls Royce & Ferraris

Santo Domingo.- The civic movement Citizen Participation (PC) denounced Wednesday that the 127 luxury vehicles imported tax free by the senators and deputies in 2010 cost Dominican taxpayers RD$266.8 million.

The lawmakers brought vehicles without paying taxes, including four Ferraris, two Porsches six Mercedes Benz, including the high end Mayback, whose price tax is RD$17.6 million, a Maserati, and even a Rolls Royce.

The vehicles are in the name  the senators Felix Maria Nova, a Ferrari valued at RD$9.7 million, others  of the same make belong to the deputies Elvin Fulgencio and Rafael Leonidas Valdez.

CP director Samir Chami Isa said the exemptions are a form of corruption because most of the lawmakers sell those vehicles for profit.

He said the money from the tax on those vehicles could build schools, hospitals, infrastructure, or a spectrum of society’s unsatisfied needs. “To bring luxury cars has become a form of accumulating wealth and to impoverish the nation and the communities for which those legislators must do more, than attend their own party and interests.”

Slams the Supreme Court

For Citizen Participation official Luis Scheker Ortiz, when the Supreme Court has to deal with political issues their position isn’t very clear. “It should be concerned more about those issues, because they are topics that concern the national, not particular interests.”

Scheker added that the entire list of lawmakers and their vehicles can be read in their Website:
