Dominican students “learn the least in the region”

Santo Domingo.- The country’s learning and investment in education were very deficient, according to the Dominican Republic Educative Progress Report 2010, disclosed yesterday.

The study by the NGO Action for Education (EDUCA) and the Latin America and Caribbean Educative Reform Promotion Program (PREAL) affirms that international tests on Dominican students “are the ones which learn the least in the region, obtaining the worst scores.”

It stressed that in a 2006 regional study the country had the most deficient results in learning and mathematics, in third and sixth grades and in language and natural sciences, also for the sixth grade.

As to investment in education, it called it well below the regional average, being “the second country in the region with lowet percentage of the GDP allocated to educative investment.”

The report recommends make the system’s quality a national priority, to increase investment in a sustained manner and to more effectively manage the use of available funds.
